Learning Basic English Language For Education Staff
It is becoming increasingly vital for education professionals to become familiar with the English language, as it remains one of the most commonly spoken languages across the globe. This training course is designed to meet that need, acknowledging that English is not only valuable for personal development, but also plays a key role in promoting intercultural exchanges between students and educators, supporting educational mobility, and accessing innovative teaching methods from international peers. Taking a comprehensive approach, the course will introduce participants to the basics of English in a practical and intuitive way, helping them incorporate the language seamlessly into their everyday routines.
As it was previously named, the course “Basic English Language for Education Staff” took place in Tenerife from 30/03/2025 to 12/04/2025. All the participants came from Poland with Irena Adamska, Zbigniew Dobrzyński, Elżbieta Gruda, Wanda Gudowicz, Grażyna Kruczek, Jerzy Nowak, Danuta Pająk – Perkowska, Magdalena Pieniążek, Jerzy Pieniążek and Waldemar Wielec from STOWARZYSZENIE SIERADZKICH SENIORÓW „SIERADEK”.
The course began with the participants getting acquainted with each other, as they came from the same country but different educational institutions. The trainer guided them, providing essential information to help them learn how to introduce themselves and discuss their daily routines using the present simple tense (such as describing habits, routines, and general truths, which are typical in everyday conversations). They also shared their expectations, contributions, and concerns about the course in the “Tree of Expectations” activity. This exercise not only helped the trainers set clear goals for the course but also helped students reflect on their strengths and areas for improvement.
The course then progressed to the topic of daily routines. By reinforcing the present simple tense, students became more confident in discussing their typical weeks and the activities they do throughout the weekdays, incorporating adverbs of frequency and verbs commonly used in routines. For example, they shared their usual plans for the weekend and then filled in their schedules with more detailed information (such as when they perform certain activities, why, and with whom).
As the participants gained more confidence in speaking, writing, and listening, the past tense was introduced, focusing on the topic of travel. First, the trainer explained how to form the past tense with both regular and irregular verbs. Then, the participants discussed their most recent travels, as it was a natural way to connect the language they would typically use in such contexts. Each participant wrote an essay and presented it to others, sharing details of their holidays and practicing the past tense.
The course also covered dreams and future plans. Participants were encouraged to practice using the present continuous tense for future arrangements, along with „will” and „going to” structures for expressing predictions and intentions. Additionally, discussing hobbies helped students express their passions and interests, making the conversations more personal and motivating.
On the final day, the participants engaged in a cooking activity to practice using imperative verbs and related cooking vocabulary. They also practiced writing and reading emails, essential skills for both personal and professional communication. This hands-on approach allowed them to apply language skills in real-life situations.
By following this ten-day plan, students can efficiently improve their English skills in a structured, engaging, and practical way. The plan ensures gradual progression, with each day building on the previous one to reinforce and expand the skills learned. Practical application is emphasized through activities like self-introductions, discussing daily routines, and travel, which provide real-life contexts for using the language. Mastery of tenses is achieved by focusing on different verb tenses (present simple, past simple, present continuous, and future), ensuring a solid understanding of essential grammar structures. Topics like travel, dreams, and hobbies make learning enjoyable and relevant to students’ lives. The integration of skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—ensures well-rounded language development. Furthermore, discussing routines, dreams, and hobbies provided students with valuable insights into different cultures, fostering global awareness and empathy.
